STUTTGART, Germany — U.S. European Command hosted leaders from Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, or SHAPE, at its Stuttgart headquarters on Sept. 9-10 for biannual staff talks, according to an official command post. 1
USEUCOM said the talks addressed operational coordination, campaign integration and joint exercise planning. It said the discussions were intended to position NATO to deter and defend across the European theater. 1
The announcement did not identify individual participants, announce a new operational plan or describe decisions made during the meeting. It also did not disclose any change to forces, deployments or exercises.
The meeting follows a July staff session hosted by U.S. Northern Command and NORAD with SHAPE and USEUCOM. The Pentagon organizations said that session covered many of the same themes, including operational coordination, campaign integration, exercises, crisis planning, strategic messaging and data sharing. 2
In March testimony to Congress, Gen. Alexus G. Grynkewich said USEUCOM operates across 53 sovereign nations and city states and includes 30 of NATO’s 32 allies in its area of responsibility. Grynkewich said he also serves as NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe, a dual role that links U.S. and alliance command responsibilities while preserving their separate authorities. 3
The talks provide evidence of continuing headquarters-level coordination, but the public record does not establish how the discussions will affect NATO posture, readiness or future military operations.
